XP-Africa goes XPFR!

Dear XP-Africa users,

since March 7th 2008, XP-Africa has worked on bringing X-Plane users the best X-Plane scenery files for the African continent.

This project has always been an offspring of the XPFR project, which i'm proud of being a part of since 2007. XP-Africa took its roots there, as well a its values, defending freeware and trying to honour designers and users by delivering highy quality content.

Aside of the nostalgic bullsh*t, every minute spent on this project, as well as every contact we've had with our beloved users over the years have been a joy and the effort always seemed to be well-rewarded by those few kind words.

Today, i'm temporarily out of time to work on anything X-Plane, Piet is out of time to work on anything X-Plane as well, and as you've probably all noticed, the project ran into the sand many moons ago.

A few day ago, a fellow XPFR member who also develops for XP-Africa mentioned something about XP-Africa on XPFR's private development forum and proposed that both projects should be fused together, XP-Africa disappearing as an independent entity and becoming part of XPFR.
Since i haven't been able to develop anything for XP-Africa lately, i had been playing with that thought myself for months. So to me, that's the greatest gift the project could ever have received. Both projects had always been linked intimately, with their files hosted on the same servers and some of the designers/converters working on both projects.
In short, XP-Africa will no longer continue to exist as it does today and all the content found here will from now on be available from XPFR.

Most importantly, the action of fusing XP-Africa into XPFR will, in my humble opinion, have only positive effects: The project lives on, maintained by passionate X-Plane developers who, as a group, have more time and more skills than i'd ever have been able to accumulate, even with Piet's gracious help.

So in the end, this is not the death of XP-Africa. It's the asurance that the project and the files that it has spawned will live on, be maintained, updated and that new African sceneries will be created to complete the work started here on XP-Africa.

Now, to the technicalities:

Most of you FS developers who have graciously authorized us to convert and adapt your wortk to X-Plane have already given their OK for this transfer. Some of you have been imposible to reach or have not yet found time to answer my requests.
Please contact me over the usual channel or over XPFR's user contact form if you have anything to object to the said transfer.
Jut so you know, the terms and conditions under which your work i being distributed for X-Plane does not change a bit: It is and always remain freeware, we maintain a single download location, all credits are clearly mentioned in the read-me's and the original documentation pertaining to the original FS file are included in the download.
To put it short, XP-Africa has fetched it's ethics from my experience with XPFR and both project share the same respect for copyright and the same passion for quality, freeware add-ons.
So technically, nothing will change behind the scenes, only the portal where users will fetch their content changes.

XP-Africa will progressively shut down over the coming month and remain open until the transfer to XPFR is complete.

I will also send out a last XP-Africa newsletter to ask you guys wether or not you'd like to be integrated to the XPFR mailing list in the future or if wish to have your address removed permanently.

HHAS - Asmara - Eritrea

XP-Africa is pleased to present HHAS Asmara - Eritrea

HHAS Asmara was originally created for FS by Nuhaid Abdulkhaleq and was converted by Michel Picard (a.k.a Brother from XPFR.org) for X-Plane.

from the read-me:
HHAS is Asmara’s international airfield, close to the capital of Eritrea. It is also a base of the Eritrean Air force. The airfield has two asphalt runways : - 07/25, 3000 meters long by 45 meters wide, equipped with an ILS (07) and landing light aids - 12/30, 1950 long by 45 meters wide, much less sophisticated and mainly used by military planes. HHAS is a high altitude airport : 2335 meters (7660 feet) and is unable to welcome the largest jet aircraft which should use Massawa international airport situated by the red Sea instead.

Botswana’s Gaborone International Airport receives airlines from many world destinations and it is the country’s premier airport. World-class airlines including British Airways, Emirates Airlines, Lufthansa Airlines, Kenya Airlines, South African Airways and other domestic Botswana airlines fly in and out of Gaborone Airport. The National flag carrier is “Air Botswana” and its fleet includes BAe146's, ATR-42/72's, and Boeing 737's. The International Sir Seretse Khama Airport, is located about 9 miles (15 km) from downtown Gaborone city. Elevation is 1006m (3300ft) and it has only one runway (8/26).

It's a great pleasure for the XP-Africa team to present this new version of Saint-Louis Airport in Senegal.

The original GOSS Saint-Louis scenery was created for Flight Simulator by Jean Charbonnel, who was kind enough to allow us to convert and adapt his work to X-Plane.

This V2 uses photoreal ground textures created using Mario Cavicchi's excellent GMaps script (http://members.ferrara.linux.it/cavicchi/GMaps/)
as well as static and animated objects by Al-Youx, Beber, pixelmaster and Mr3D (Truck, IVECO, LandRover,birds, grass etc. ...).
It also featured the now closed (but rendered useable for your pleasure) 01/19 runway, more realistic surroundings and a corercted apt.dat . Night lighting and other goodies and eye-candy features have been added as well.

Senegal Airfields v1.0

XP-Africa is very proud to present Senegal Airfields Scenery v1.0 - a collaborative project that aims at covering most known airfields and other esoteric strips in Sénégal.

This package was originally started as a complementary scenery pack for GOSS - Saint-Louis v2, but has now extended far beyond that point - we now have 11 airfields and there are a lot more to come, inside Senegal but also in the bordering countries.

Senegal Airfields Scenery includes the following airports and airstrips:

Plaine Corail - Rodrigues - Mauritius

Located about 350 nm from FIMP Plaisance International airport, FIMR has daily flights to the capital, Port Louis and has become the second largest hub of the country.

Very neat little scenery, lots of detail and beautiful reproduction of the airport buildings - a "must have" scenery !

OYSQ - Socotra-Mori - Yemen (v1.0)

A beautiful new scenery package from Marcel "Teutonique" Wislet,
converted with permission by Michel Picard (aka Brother) has been added to XP-Africa: OYSQ Socotra-Mori in Yemen.
Socotra's OYSQ airport is beautifully detailed, as well as some of the surrounding villages.

The scenery includes a reminding of the Mori village, the town of Hadibou (the largest of the island – 6.5 nautical miles of OYSQ, azimuth 084) and its small oil terminal 3.5 nautical miles further East.

"Socotra is a small archipelago of four islands in the Indian Ocean off the coast of the Horn of Africa some 190 nautical miles (220 mi; 350 km) south of the Arabian peninsula. It is very isolated, and through the process of speciation, a third of its plant life is found nowhere else on the planet. It has been described as the most alien-looking place on Earth"

Mori airfield, on Socotra island, has a 03/21 paved runway which is 3,300 meters long by 47 meters wide.

This runway has been built during the Cold War by the Soviet Union on the basis of agreements with the then Democratic Republic of Yemen. Socotra-Mori airport is an ancient military air base called Ras-Karma where some assesments say that is still operationnal a russian military intelligence center of the FAPSI, equivalent to Echelon system operated by USA and commonwealth allies.

GOOY - Dakar Yoff - Léopold Sédar Senghor - Sénégal v1.5

XP-Africa is happy to introduce a new, revised version of GOOY-Dakar-Sénégal.

The original GOOY - Dakar scenery was created for Flight Simulator
by Jean Charbonnel, who was kind enough to allow me to convert and adapt
his work to X-Plane.

Changelog for v1.5:
- We now have (almost) realistic night lighting on the main Apron and car park !
(It still needs a bit of iprovement, but i'm quite happy with the result)
- New textures for some objects that missed propper textures (instead of the infamous fs2x palette file).
- Some objects replaced by more pertinent ones.
- Some minor changes to the apt.dat, including exact tower view positioning.
- A few new animated objects here and there as well as various other refinements.
- The tree-galore around the airport has been suppressed, it all looks a lot better now in X-Plane v9.x .
- Some odd/misplaced objects have been suppressed and some ground textures
that provoqued flickering have been replaced by some work on the apt.dat

Coming up in v2.0:

- Mainly a completely revised apt.dat, to fit real-world data and GMaps/G2XPL overlays - this is the big chunk and that's why it's truly going to be a v2.0 - i don't have time for that right now, maybe sometime this summer.
- A new set of revised textures and night textures for some of the main buildings (some textures are too low-def and some night textures are just way too bright)
- Some "split" objects will be reassembled and retextured.
A big thanks out to Al-Youx and Beber for their great animated objects and lighthouses! :D

FYHV - Hartmann Valley - Namibia

XP-Africa presents two new bush strip for North-Eastern Namibia, FYMF-MarienFluss and FYHV-Hartmann Valley. The two small strips have been created using Robin Peel's recently added airport data, boasting lots of new bush strips in Namibia and Botswana.
The scenery package was created using GMaps by Mario Cavicchi and is supposed to be used with the related G2XPL PhotoReal coverage of the North-Eastern end of Namibia, near the border to Angola, available here:

It's a big chunk, approx. 750MB, but the result is worth the ride.

created by the AfricaSim team, composed of Frédéric Kabalu & Nassim Naidja.
A big big extra 'thanks!' to Frederic Kabalu, who helped me a lot by providing all needed elements and infos for the conversion.

ATTENTION:
The original scenery had photoreal coverage of the city of Tunis and the airport.
Since i've been unable to convert these textures propperly, i decided to create photoreal coverage for the region, as an add-on that is. (they're absolutely not necessary to run the scenery but it looks a lot better with them)

Thanks to Olivier "Inamat" and Bruno Lagougine "Lagb", who did all the job,
we now have photoreal coverage for the regions of Tunis, Tunis-Nord, Monastir, Djerba, Bizerte and Borj el Amri. You can download them HERE

These overlays will only work from X-Plane v9.20 on, the terrain files use X-Plane's new Texture Paging function to ensure high framerate.

Some people report broken files after download. Usually re-downloading solves this issue.

A big thanks also to Helgo for his static ships and Mr3D/XSims for the animated objects.

Important:
For those of you who have installed DTMB-Monastir, you'll have to replace the apt.dat with THIS ONE . To do so, unpack the file, go to your Custom Scenery folder, Open the AFRI-DTMB-Monastir-Tunisia folder, go to Earth Nav Data and replace the apt.dat file with the one you just downloaded.
It seems the original DTMB scenery contains apt.dat info for DTTA as well, and that could be a problem, sorry for not seeing that before.

There are also some new objects and lights and the forestation has been cut down a bit to give more space around the runway as it seems to be in reality. The tower viewpoint has been reset and i have finally added custom starting locations on the apron.

Finally !

Mathew Ministry, the original creator of this scene has given me permission to convert.

Since Mathew has no email and no internet at home it's been a real piece of work to reach him but finally, after months of searching, i ended up finding him on a remote FS related forum.
So i'm happy to intoduce the first beta release of the Zimbabwe scenery for X-Plane, including the airports of Harare (FVHA) and Victoria Falls (FVFA), offering you to fly over the beautiful landscapes of Zimbabwe.

If you want to thank Mathew for his scenes, please leave a comment here, as it's the only easy way to get through to him, and i'm sure he will greatly appreciate it.

Please Note:

This scenery package relies on OpenSceneryX for a lot of objects.
It will work without, thanks to the icluded placeholder, but you'll miss a lot of eye candy.

Hello there,

Just a short post to introduce XP-Africa.
My goal here will be to provide quality scenery creations and conversions from FS packages for the region of Africa. X-Plane doesn't have so much scenes for Africa yet, so i hope you'll like our work. This project is supposed to serve the X-Plane community and i'd love it to become a true community project. I'm also happy to connect the FS and X-Plane communities a bit more by starting this collaboration with Frédéric Kabalu who's scenes will all be converted, including the future releases he's curently preparing for FS.

We'll start in this month of March 2008 with the sceneries for Dakar GOOY and Banjul GBYD in their first beta version. Both are pretty much finished for the airports part but i promised myself to have the city of Dakar around the airport ready for GOOY v1.0.
In addition we will also have the scenes for the Gabun Airports, hopefully coming before end of the month.

I would like to thank Frederic Kabalu and Jean Charbonnel, creators of some beautiful Africa sceneries for FS, for their support in converting their scenery packages. I'd also like to thank Daniel Leygnat and the whole XPFR crew for their continuous support and giving me the motivation to make XP-Africa.

If anyone has interrest in participating to the project, contributing to scenery development or testing the realeases, please feel free to contact me as any helping hand is always welcome.

Furthermore, your opinion and comments about theses releases being one of my primary source of inspiration, you're warmly welcome to post them here.
